On World Consumer Rights Day, the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) announced that it received nearly 84,000 reports in 2024, marking a nearly 10 percent increase from the previous year. These reports, which include both questions and complaints, primarily came from consumers (78,000) and businesses (6,000), providing valuable insights for ACM's regulatory efforts.
A significant rise in reports was noted regarding unsolicited and misleading telemarketing calls, as well as issues related to online shopping. Consumers particularly expressed concerns about 'dropshippers,' who often failed to deliver products, delivered faulty items, or created complications with returns.
To assist consumers in understanding and exercising their rights, ACM is launching a series of explainer videos on World Consumer Rights Day. These videos aim to clarify common consumer issues reported to ACM, enhancing public awareness and knowledge.
ACM's consumer information portal, ACM ConsuWijzer, attracted over 3 million visitors, with the most popular page featuring sample letters. Many visitors sought guidance on what actions to take after making a poor online purchase and the regulations surrounding telemarketing practices.
Edwin van Houten, Director of ACM’s Consumer Department, emphasized the importance of consumer awareness, stating that many individuals are unaware of their rights. For instance, he highlighted that the warranty on a product does not necessarily end after two years, and consumers have a 14-day cooling-off period for purchases made at home or over the phone, unlike in-store purchases.
