Over 5000 Australians Warned of Romance Scam Threat

30.01.2025 | Australian competition authority

Australian authorities have alerted over 5000 individuals about potential romance scams, urging them to avoid sending money to online acquaintances. This initiative follows a significant investigation into a scam operation based in the Philippines.

In a proactive measure, the National Anti-Scam Centre, in collaboration with the Australian Federal Police and international partners, has sent text warnings to more than 5000 Australians who may have fallen victim to romance scams. These scams, primarily targeting men over 35, involve fraudsters creating fake romantic relationships online to manipulate victims into investing money.

The alerts were triggered by an investigation in the Philippines, where authorities uncovered a scam operation in Manila. This operation, dubbed Operation Firestorm, has led to the identification of over 5000 Australian phone numbers linked to messages found on encrypted platforms. The investigation has also resulted in the seizure of significant technology, including over 300 computer towers and 1000 mobile phones.

Scammers typically lure victims into investing in cryptocurrency, requesting initial amounts between AUD $300 and $800, before persuading them to transfer larger sums. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission reported that Australians lost approximately $23.6 million to such scams in 2024 alone.

Authorities emphasize the importance of international cooperation in combating organized cybercrime and urge anyone who receives a warning to take it seriously. Victims are advised to report any suspicious activity to their banks and local police, and to be cautious about sharing personal information online.
