The Polish competition authority has taken decisive action against Vectra, imposing a fine exceeding 80 million PLN due to the company's unfair market practices that violated collective consumer interests.
Despite previous interventions by the authority, Vectra continued to unilaterally alter contract terms and unjustifiably raise subscription fees for television and internet services. The authority's president, Tomasz Chróstny, emphasized that Vectra's actions were in direct violation of consumer rights.
Vectra had been changing contract terms during their validity, introducing clauses that allowed for unilateral fee increases without proper notification to customers. Consumer complaints confirmed that these illegal practices persisted, prompting the authority to take further action against the company.
The imposed fine reflects not only Vectra's significant revenue but also its disregard for prior warnings from the competition authority. Consumers were forced to pay more for services, with annual increases reaching up to 144 PLN for those using both television and internet services.
In addition to the fine, Vectra is required to compensate affected consumers by refunding the increased subscription fees. The company must inform current customers about the decision and provide either refunds or discounts on their subscription fees. Former customers will also be eligible for refunds.
Consumers retain the right to pursue claims through complaints and, if necessary, escalate matters to court based on unfair market practices and civil code provisions. The decision is not yet final, as Vectra has the right to appeal.
