Hungarian Authority Warns Gamers About Virtual Traps

04.02.2025 | Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian competition authority is raising awareness about the dangers of video games, urging players and parents to be cautious of potential financial and mental traps.

The Hungarian competition authority, known as GVH, has highlighted the increasing time young people spend on video and computer games, prompting a closer examination of mobile and video games. In 2024, GVH launched an educational campaign to inform parents and children about the risks associated with free mobile games.

In a recent analysis, GVH reviewed 30 popular games suitable for various age groups, providing valuable advice to parents and game distributors. The authority noted that while mobile games are relatively simple, video games present more complex challenges that players must navigate.

GVH's analysis of major gaming platforms revealed several issues, including the use of dual virtual currencies, where one can be earned through gameplay and the other must be purchased with real money. This can distort the gaming experience and create unfair advantages for paying players. Additionally, the authority raised concerns about the lack of transparency regarding the real-world value of these virtual currencies.

Another risk identified was the 'loot-box' system, which offers random content and can lead to uncontrolled spending. GVH emphasized the importance of tracking expenses and evaluating whether the benefits of such purchases justify the costs.

Moreover, GVH pointed out the manipulation of player habits through reward systems that encourage regular logins, potentially leading to frustration and a sense of compulsion. These seemingly harmless mechanisms can adversely affect players' mental well-being over time.

Despite the challenges, GVH noted that successful regulatory and consumer actions have reduced harmful trends in online gaming, enhancing player protection. The authority encourages players to understand game business models, monitor their spending, and make informed decisions regarding in-game purchases.

GVH also stresses the importance of discussing digital dangers in schools, as part of its Digital Awareness Program launched in 2024, inviting schools to participate.

To help players, GVH recommends: tracking in-game spending, understanding the value of virtual currencies, considering the information provided about loot-box rewards, and setting time limits for gaming sessions.

For parents, GVH advises monitoring the games their children play, discussing the tricks used by game developers, setting spending limits, and utilizing parental control services to manage screen time and ensure safe computer use.
