The Belgian Competition Authority (BCA) has officially closed its investigation into the introduction of a quota for U23 teams in the Challenger Pro League. This decision follows the Royal Belgian Football Association's (RBFA) discontinuation of the quota, which mandated a minimum of four U23 teams in the league.

The investigation was initiated on July 4, 2025, after several professional football clubs filed complaints regarding the quota. The quota was implemented by the RBFA’s High Council and took effect on August 8, 2025, for the 2025-2026 season. It aimed to ensure the permanent participation of U23 teams and provided them with more favorable relegation rules compared to traditional clubs.

In response to concerns about potential discrimination and violations of competition law, the BCA found that the quota could undermine competition among clubs in the Challenger Pro League and the Jupiler Pro League. Although the BCA did not suspend the quota initially due to a lack of urgency, it later ordered the suspension of the quota's effects on May 8, 2026, pending further investigation.

On June 2, 2026, the Pro League’s General Assembly approved the discontinuation of the quota, which was ratified by the RBFA’s High Council on June 15, 2026, and took effect on July 1, 2026. With the quota now officially discontinued and its effects neutralized, the BCA has decided to terminate its investigation but will continue to monitor the rules governing the Challenger Pro League and Jupiler Pro League.
