The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has issued a warning regarding a growing list of recalled wireless power banks, which have been linked to serious burn injuries and property damage. Since 2020, there have been 17 recalls, with 9 occurring in the last 16 months, affecting approximately 34,000 units still in consumer possession.
ACCC Deputy Chair Catriona Lowe highlighted the dangers, noting that incidents often happen while the power banks are charging devices, increasing the risk of injury to users. Consumers are advised to stop using recalled power banks immediately and follow the recall instructions to obtain refunds or replacements.
The ACCC emphasizes the importance of adhering to manufacturer guidelines when using power banks, particularly those containing lithium-ion batteries, which can be highly flammable. Consumers are urged to store these devices properly and avoid charging them on flammable surfaces.
Several specific models have been recalled due to overheating risks, including power banks from Anker, Baseus, SnapWireless, Quad Lock, and Belkin. Each of these recalls has been prompted by reports of overheating, bulging, and even fires, leading to serious injuries and property damage.
