The Bundeskartellamt has granted approval for Demant A/S to acquire Kind's hearing aid retail stores and the manufacturer audifon GmbH. This merger combines the third and fourth largest hearing aid retailers in Germany, resulting in a chain with approximately 1,000 locations.
Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, stated that despite the merger creating the largest hearing aid chain, sufficient competition remains in most affected cities and regions due to other national chains and regional providers. The authority had initial concerns in 15 regional markets, but these were deemed insufficient to block the merger under German antitrust law.
Germany has over 7,000 hearing aid locations, with significant competitors including Sonova Retail Deutschland GmbH and Amplifon Deutschland, as well as numerous regional chains and independent retailers. Leading optical chains also offer hearing aid services in some locations.
The Bundeskartellamt conducted a thorough review of market conditions across the various locations and identified competitive concerns in 17 regional markets. After addressing these concerns, Demant modified its merger proposal, divesting three locations near Kassel, which alleviated the authority's worries.
Despite the merger's impact on the hearing aid manufacturing market, the Bundeskartellamt found no significant competitive issues. Consumers will continue to have access to a variety of hearing aids from alternative manufacturers, ensuring that innovation and competition remain intact.
