In a recent address at George Washington Law School, Acting Assistant Attorney General Omeed A. Assefi discussed the Department of Justice's (DOJ) aggressive antitrust enforcement strategy. He emphasized the importance of protecting free markets and ensuring justice for consumers.

Assefi highlighted the DOJ's achievements in criminal antitrust enforcement, noting a historic increase in convictions and prison sentences for antitrust violations. In 2025, the Antitrust Division secured 37 convictions, with a significant rise in prison days imposed, signaling a shift towards prioritizing incarceration over financial penalties.

One notable case mentioned was the conviction of Eduardo Lopez, who was sentenced to 40 months in prison for wage-fixing in the healthcare sector. This case marked a significant milestone as it was the first criminal trial conviction for wage-fixing in U.S. history.

The DOJ also launched a Whistleblower Rewards Program, incentivizing individuals to report antitrust violations, which has already led to successful prosecutions. Assefi stressed the importance of collaboration with the antitrust bar to enhance enforcement and compliance.

On the civil enforcement front, the DOJ achieved a landmark settlement with Live Nation, which included divestitures aimed at increasing competition in the ticketing industry. This settlement is expected to lower prices and enhance consumer choice.

Assefi concluded by reaffirming the DOJ's commitment to fostering a competitive marketplace, emphasizing that antitrust enforcement is crucial for economic opportunity and the American Dream.
