The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has successfully negotiated formal commitments from Ticketmaster to improve the clarity of ticket pricing for consumers. This action follows an investigation prompted by concerns over the sale of tickets for the Oasis tour.
The CMA's investigation revealed two main issues: first, Ticketmaster failed to inform fans that standing tickets were available at two different prices, and that prices would increase once the cheaper tickets sold out. Second, some 'platinum' tickets were sold at nearly 2.5 times the price of standard tickets without adequate explanation of their value.
In response to these findings, Ticketmaster has agreed to several undertakings. They will now notify fans 24 hours in advance if a tiered pricing system is in place, ensuring that consumers are aware of potential price increases. Additionally, Ticketmaster will provide clearer information about ticket prices during online queues, including updates on ticket availability.
Moreover, the company will avoid using misleading ticket labels, ensuring that all tickets are accurately described. Ticketmaster is also required to submit regular compliance reports to the CMA over the next two years, with the possibility of enforcement action if they fail to adhere to these commitments.
Sarah Cardell, Chief Executive of the CMA, emphasized the importance of clear and accurate information for fans purchasing tickets. She stated that while the CMA cannot guarantee ticket availability for popular events, they can ensure that fans are well-informed about pricing and ticket options.
These changes are part of the CMA's broader efforts to enhance consumer protection in the ticketing sector, which includes previous actions against other ticketing platforms. The CMA's investigation was conducted under its prior consumer law powers, as new powers allowing for direct enforcement and fines will come into effect in April 2025.
