The Bundeskartellamt, Germany's competition authority, has granted approval for Media Group Bayern to acquire Media Group Oberfranken in a preliminary review process.
Media Group Bayern publishes regional daily newspapers such as 'Passauer Neue Presse', 'Donaukurier', and 'Mittelbayerische Zeitung'. Meanwhile, Media Group Oberfranken publishes newspapers including 'Fränkischer Tag', 'Coburger Tageblatt', 'Bayerische Rundschau', and 'Saale-Zeitung'. Additionally, it is involved with radio broadcasters, operates regionally focused online portals, offers printing services, and publishes specialized magazines.
Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, stated that the acquisition poses no competitive concerns. The two media groups operate in different regions of Bavaria, indicating no direct competition between them. Furthermore, there are no concerns regarding their other business activities.
In mergers involving newspaper publishers, the Bundeskartellamt regularly examines the impact on both readership and advertising markets, assessing whether sufficient alternatives are available for readers and advertisers. However, the diversity of opinions is not a criterion for antitrust evaluation.
