The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has taken action against three businesses, imposing fines totaling £6 million for misleading sales tactics. This enforcement is part of the CMA's broader initiative to protect consumers and ensure fair trading practices.
Wayfair was fined £4.8 million for misleading customers with time-limited offers that were not genuine, creating a false sense of urgency. Appliances Direct received a £1.2 million fine for similar misleading practices and for automatically opting customers into paid services without their consent. Additionally, Gold’s Gym was fined £45,000 for failing to clearly disclose mandatory joining fees in their membership pricing.
All three companies cooperated with the CMA during the investigation, which resulted in a 40% reduction in their fines. The CMA has also secured refunds for affected customers, totaling nearly £2.4 million over the past 18 months, as part of its new consumer protection enforcement powers.
Hayley Fletcher, Senior Director for Consumer Protection at the CMA, emphasized the importance of transparency in pricing and the need for businesses to treat customers fairly. The CMA's actions are part of a wider effort to alleviate cost of living pressures on consumers.
