The Hungarian competition authority, known as GVH, has recently received multiple reports from the public regarding potential scams involving timeshare owners and previous victims being pressured for money. In response, the GVH is reiterating its commitment to combatting abuses related to the secondary sale of timeshare rights, which have been a persistent issue over the years.
GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó emphasized the need to put an end to these fraudulent practices that exploit the most vulnerable members of society, particularly the elderly and financially disadvantaged. He stated that strict penalties should deter criminals from deceiving these individuals.
In March, the GVH launched a campaign called 'Think Calmly' to raise awareness about the dangers associated with the secondary sale of timeshare rights. The authority has previously proposed legislative changes to strengthen consumer rights in this area, including requiring prior public approval for secondary sales and banning unrelated ancillary contracts.
Given the recent influx of consumer complaints, the GVH is once again urging lawmakers to consider tightening the legal framework surrounding timeshare abuses. They recommend that individuals looking to sell their timeshare carefully review the terms of any offers and verify the reliability and consumer ratings of the businesses involved before signing any contracts.
