The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced that Vets Central's proposed acquisition of Hills Veterinary Centre will undergo a Phase 2 review. This decision stems from concerns that the acquisition could significantly lessen competition in the supply of small animal veterinary services in the Blackwood area of South Australia.
Vets Central operates Familypet Vet Coromandel Valley, located just 3 km from Hills Veterinary Centre, which raises concerns about overlapping customer catchment areas. ACCC Commissioner Dr. Philip Williams highlighted that the merger would combine Vets Central's clinic with one of its closest competitors, potentially reducing competition in the local market.
Additionally, the ACCC is examining whether Vets Central's previous acquisitions, including the recent purchase of Chandlers Hill Vet, could collectively impact competition in the area. The ACCC has not yet reached a conclusion and will continue its assessment during the Phase 2 review.
The ACCC invites submissions regarding the acquisition by September 1, 2026, and further details can be found on the ACCC’s Acquisitions Register.
