Italian Football Federation Revises Apprenticeship Contract Rules for Young Players

13.02.2025 | Italian competition authority

The Italian Competition Authority has successfully influenced the Italian Football Federation to change its rules, ensuring that young professional football players must give their consent for apprenticeship contracts.

The Italian Competition Authority has made significant strides in reforming the rules governing apprenticeship contracts for young professional football players in Italy. Following a series of discussions and hearings with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) and various professional leagues, the Authority's moral suasion led to a crucial change in the Internal Organization Rules (NOIF) of FIGC.

Previously, FIGC allowed football clubs to impose apprenticeship contracts on young players for a term of up to three years without their express consent. However, with the new regulations approved by the Federal Council on 30 January 2025, clubs will now be required to obtain the explicit agreement of young players before extending their contracts beyond the standard two-year period mandated by law.

This change is set to take effect on 1 July 2025, ensuring that players who do not wish to commit to a longer contract can pursue opportunities elsewhere once their two-year term concludes. The new rules aim to protect the rights of young athletes and promote fairer practices within the football industry.
