The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is taking action against Stormy Wellington, a prominent figure in multilevel marketing (MLM), for allegedly using false earning claims to recruit new members. The FTC's complaint highlights the deceptive practices that mislead individuals seeking to earn a living through MLMs.

Wellington, who has been involved with two MLM companies, Total Life Changes (TLC) and Farmasi, is accused of making exaggerated claims about potential earnings. In her promotional materials, including social media posts, she suggested that new recruits could earn substantial incomes, including claims of making six figures within a short time frame.

Despite these enticing promises, the FTC's investigation revealed that the majority of participants in both TLC and Farmasi earned little to no money. For instance, TLC's income disclosures indicated that 76.8% of active participants did not earn any compensation in 2023, while Farmasi reported that fewer than 1% of participants achieved the income levels Wellington advertised.

As part of a proposed settlement, Wellington will be prohibited from making misleading claims about potential earnings and must substantiate any earnings claims she makes in the future. This includes providing evidence to prospective recruits and informing her downline participants about the restrictions placed on her.

The FTC's actions underscore its commitment to protecting consumers from deceptive practices in the MLM industry, particularly those that exploit individuals' aspirations for financial success.
