The Greek competition authority has finalized its public consultation on the inquiry into banking deposits, which took place on February 26, 2026. This consultation was based on the interim report published in December 2025.

Stakeholders were invited to submit their positions through written statements or by participating in the teleconference. The deadline for submissions has been extended to March 31, 2026.

The input from stakeholders will serve as a valuable guide for drafting the final report, which is expected to be released by the end of the year.

The discussion was broadcast live on the competition authority's website and was attended by hundreds of listeners, including key officials from the authority and representatives from the banking sector, consumer groups, and academia.

During the consultation, the competition authority presented findings and proposals, highlighting issues such as the limited and delayed pass-through of European Central Bank interest rate increases to deposit rates, the high opportunity cost of holding bank deposits, and the need for increased competition through new entrants in the market.

Additionally, the authority discussed the potential for creating state savings accounts similar to France's Livret A, as well as the development of genuine savings products that reward capital retention with favorable interest rates.
