In 2024, the total daily newspaper circulation in Croatia fell to 24.2 million copies, marking a 14% decline compared to the previous year. Weekly newspaper sales also decreased by 5%, totaling 1.6 million copies. Despite the decline in circulation, advertising revenues for daily newspapers remained stable at €14.8 million, while weekly newspapers saw a 12% increase in advertising revenue, reaching €4.6 million.
The Croatian Competition Agency (CCA) conducted a survey of the press market, analyzing 28 newspaper publishers and distributors. The results indicated a continued downward trend in daily newspaper circulation, although the rate of decline was slightly less severe than in previous years. The best-selling daily newspaper was 24sata, while Hrvatski tjednik led the weekly segment.
In terms of distribution, Tisak plus was the only distributor in Croatia, but it experienced a turnover decline in 2024. However, the retail press market saw a 2% increase in turnover, reversing the previous year's decline. The largest publishers, Hanza Media Group and Styria Group, reported the highest advertising revenues from electronic publications, with 24sata leading in this area.
Looking ahead, significant changes are expected in the press distribution market as Distribucija tiskanih medija d.o.o. is set to replace Tisak plus as the new distributor in early 2025. Additionally, press distribution services have been designated as a service of general economic interest, which may impact the market structure moving forward.
