Hungarian Authority Investigates Normaflore Advertising Claims

20.02.2025 | Hungarian competition authority

The Hungarian competition authority has launched an investigation into Opella Healthcare for potentially misleading advertising of its Normaflore products, which may exceed approved usage guidelines.

The Hungarian competition authority, known as GVH, has initiated an investigation against Opella Healthcare Commercial Kft., the distributor of the Normaflore product line. The authority suspects that the company has made promotional claims about two of its products that go beyond the approved usage guidelines.

Specifically, the GVH is looking into advertisements for Normaflore oral suspension and Normaflore extra 4 billion/5 ml oral suspension, which were promoted with statements such as 'contains SMART spores' and 'the smartest choice for antibiotic treatment or diarrhea.' The authority believes these claims may not align with the authorized application instructions for the Normaflore products.

The initiation of this investigation does not imply that the company has committed a legal violation. Instead, it aims to clarify the facts and potentially prove the alleged infringement. The investigation is expected to last three months, with the possibility of two extensions of up to two months each if justified.

The GVH has reminded businesses that when advertising over-the-counter medications, they can only make claims that fully comply with the approved usage guidelines. The case is registered under the official number VJ/10/2025.
