The Bundeskartellamt has given its preliminary approval to the marketing model proposed by Deutsche Fußball Liga (DFL) for the sale of media rights to Bundesliga matches from the 2025/26 season onwards.

The Bundeskartellamt has completed its examination of DFL's marketing model for the sale of media rights to Bundesliga matches and has given its preliminary approval. The model includes the auctioning of live pay-TV rights in four packages and allows for one broadcaster to acquire exclusive live rights to all matches. The authority has determined that the change in the market conditions justifies waiving the "no-single-buyer rule" for the upcoming licensing period. The joint selling of media rights by DFL is considered an agreement restricting competition but can be exempted under competition law if certain conditions are met. The judgment in the recent Super League case by the Court of Justice of the European Union may impact the Bundeskartellamt's future assessment of joint selling of media rights.
