The French competition authority has fined three professional canning associations and a can manufacturers' trade union, along with 11 member companies, for implementing practices that prevented competition on the presence or absence of Bisphenol A (BPA) in food containers. The practices involved preventing manufacturers from communicating on the absence of BPA in their containers and encouraging manufacturers to refuse to supply BPA-free cans before the ban came into effect. The authority considered the practices to be very serious as they deprived consumers of the choice of BPA-free products. However, the fines imposed took into account the diversity of the entities involved and the specific legal and regulatory framework.
