The Hungarian competition authority, Gazdasági Versenyhivatal (GVH), has mandated that Temu, an online marketplace, refund at least 882 million forints to Hungarian consumers as a result of an investigation concluded in April 2026. Each consumer who made purchases on the Temu platform between November 2023 and September 2024 will receive a compensation of 2000 forints.
Consumers will be notified via email in the coming days, providing them with a link to submit their bank details or relevant information for alternative payment methods. In addition to the refunds, Temu has already paid a fine of 437 million forints to the Hungarian central budget.
The GVH's investigation revealed that Temu had engaged in deceptive pricing practices, including misleading discounts and false claims about product availability. Temu cooperated with the GVH during the investigation, acknowledged the violations, and agreed to implement a comprehensive consumer protection compliance program.
As part of the settlement, the GVH will monitor the execution of the compliance program and the compensation payments. The authority has a history of addressing issues with global online platforms, having previously secured significant compensations for Hungarian consumers from other companies.
