The CNMC has announced a revision of the operational procedure for the Active Demand Response Service (SRAD) in Spain. This service allows consumers, including industries, to reduce their electricity consumption when the system operator, Red Eléctrica de España (REE), requires it to ensure supply security.
The SRAD is a voluntary service that compensates consumers for their availability and for reducing consumption when activated. The recent changes aim to align the SRAD more closely with the standard balancing product, thereby facilitating demand adaptation to compete with generation services.
The revisions include reducing the contract period from 12 to 6 months, allowing shorter-term auctions, and removing the minimum size barrier for installations. Additionally, the activation time will be aligned with the standard product, and the energy delivery period will be shortened from 3 to 2 hours. These changes are designed to enhance competitiveness and encourage greater participation in the service.
