The Energy Competition Task Force (Task Force) in New Zealand has announced its plans to continue its work into 2026, emphasizing a refreshed agenda aimed at improving competition in the electricity market.

Task Force member and Electricity Authority Acting Chair Erik Westergaard highlighted the importance of stakeholder engagement in shaping the new priorities, which will focus on collaborative actions that can significantly impact competition and consumer benefits.

The Task Force has identified key areas for collaboration among the Electricity Authority, the Commerce Commission, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). These include enhancing network performance through local battery storage solutions, addressing pricing and competition issues related to lines companies, and continuing efforts to ensure a level playing field in the market.

Additionally, the Task Force will monitor barriers to the development of flexibility services and may take action against firms that exercise market power. Commerce Commission Chair John Small reassured the public that the regulatory bodies are aligned in their efforts to improve the electricity sector.

Since its inception in August 2024, the Task Force has successfully implemented eight initiatives aimed at strengthening the electricity market, and it remains committed to delivering further benefits in terms of competition, consumer choice, and affordability.
