The Polish competition authority has mandated Wodociągi Zachodniopomorskie to alter its practices regarding the costs of water supply repairs, ensuring consumers are not unfairly charged.

The Polish competition authority, known as UOKiK, has intervened to require Wodociągi Zachodniopomorskie to change its practices concerning the costs associated with repairing water supply issues. Previously, the company demanded that consumers cover the expenses for repairs on water connections extending from their property boundaries to the water supply network.

This practice often left residents liable for repairs on public property, such as sidewalks or roads, and in some cases, the company would cut off water supply to those who refused to pay for repairs. UOKiK's President, Tomasz Chróstny, emphasized that according to Supreme Court rulings, the water company should bear the costs of repairs beyond the property lines of consumers.

As part of the new mandate, Wodociągi Zachodniopomorskie will cease charging for repairs outside property boundaries and will not pursue any claims for such costs. Consumers will receive corrected invoices reflecting a zero balance. The company is also required to announce these changes on its website by the end of 2025.

Additionally, UOKiK has released a guide for water service consumers, addressing common issues and outlining the appropriate regulatory bodies for resolving disputes. This guide is intended for both consumers and water companies, ensuring clarity on pricing and service standards.
