A federal grand jury has indicted Jon Christopher Burt, Gerald Steven Lavender, and Jack Nelson Purvis Jr. for their involvement in bid rigging schemes targeting the sale of sports equipment to Mississippi public schools.
The indictment alleges that from July 2010 to July 2023, the defendants conspired to manipulate the competitive bidding process, affecting at least 44 public schools and misappropriating millions of taxpayer dollars.
According to the charges, the defendants circumvented Mississippi procurement laws by agreeing in advance on who would win the bids and submitting intentionally inflated fake bids to the schools.
Each defendant faces serious charges under the Sherman Act, with potential penalties including significant prison time and hefty fines. The case is part of a broader federal investigation into anticompetitive conduct in the school sports equipment industry.
