The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has published a Statement of Issues outlining its preliminary competition concerns regarding Yamaha Motor Australia Pty Ltd’s proposed acquisition of Telwater Pty Ltd. Telwater is recognized as the largest manufacturer and supplier of aluminium trailer boats in Australia, holding significant brand recognition in the recreational marine industry.

The ACCC's initial assessment indicates that the acquisition could substantially lessen competition in the wholesale supply of outboard motors in Australia. Yamaha, a leading supplier of outboard motors, may gain the ability to link the supply of its motors to Telwater's trailer boats, potentially requiring dealers to sell both products. This could hinder competition from other outboard motor suppliers, ultimately reducing consumer choice and increasing prices.

Commissioner Dr. Philip Williams emphasized that the merger could limit access for rival suppliers of trailer boats and outboard motors, leading to a less competitive market. The ACCC is inviting submissions from interested parties regarding these concerns, with a deadline set for October 23, 2025. The full Statement of Issues is available on the ACCC’s website.
