The President of the Polish competition authority (UOKiK) has raised allegations against the publishing company Wiedza i Praktyka, focusing on misleading consumers when offering trial copies of publications and access to services, as well as violating consumer rights in distance contracts.

Wiedza i Praktyka, which publishes and sells books and magazines, has been accused of presenting promotional trial offers in a way that could mislead consumers into thinking they were receiving free access, while in reality, they would incur costs for subscriptions or services unless they canceled in time.

Additionally, the authority found that during phone orders, consultants emphasized the benefits of the promotional offer but delayed providing crucial information about the paid subscription until the end of the conversation, potentially breaching the obligation to give clear and complete information before contract conclusion.

Another serious allegation involves the company's refusal to allow consumers to withdraw from distance contracts, claiming that the withdrawal period had expired, despite consumers having the right to cancel within 14 days without reason.

Furthermore, the UOKiK criticized the labeling of the 'Order' button on the company's website, stating it does not meet legal requirements if it implies a payment obligation without clear wording. If the allegations are confirmed, Wiedza i Praktyka could face fines of up to 10% of its turnover and be ordered to cease the questioned practices.
