Sarah Proudfoot has officially been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). This appointment comes after an extensive external recruitment process aimed at finding a suitable leader for the agency.
Proudfoot has been with the ACCC since 2005, starting her career at the agency’s Infocentre. Over the years, she has taken on various senior roles, including serving as the executive general manager of the ACCC Infrastructure Division from 2020 to 2024. In this role, she oversaw the ACCC’s work in critical sectors such as telecommunications, rail, ports, airports, electricity, and gas, as well as leading the 2023 Childcare Inquiry.
In August 2024, she was appointed as the executive general manager of the ACCC’s National Anti-Scam Centre and has been acting as the chief executive since February 2025. ACCC Chair Gina-Cass Gottlieb praised Proudfoot for her strategic leadership, personal drive, and commitment to public service, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the agency effectively.
Proudfoot expressed her enthusiasm for the new role, highlighting the impact of the ACCC's work on people's lives and her commitment to protecting competition and serving consumers across the Australian economy. She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.
