Matthew Chiasson, Senior Policy Advisor at the Competition Bureau, addressed the Senate Standing Committee on Banking, Commerce and the Economy, highlighting the Bureau's dual role in enforcing competition laws and advocating for competition-friendly policies.
Chiasson noted that the Bureau supports the government's recent budget measures aimed at increasing competition across key sectors, which are seen as essential steps to drive down costs for consumers.
He discussed specific legislative changes, including the Consumer-Driven Banking Act, which aims to enhance competition in the financial sector by allowing consumers to share their data securely, thus facilitating easier provider switching and innovation.
Additionally, Chiasson touched on the greenwashing provisions in the Competition Act, which aim to clarify the requirements for businesses making environmental claims, ensuring they can substantiate these claims without needing to rely on an internationally recognized methodology.
He concluded by reminding the committee of the Bureau's obligation to conduct investigations privately, which may limit the information they can disclose about ongoing investigations.
