Polish Competition Authority Launches Campaign to Warn Consumers About Buy Now, Pay Later Risks

16.01.2025 | Polish competition authority

The Polish competition authority has launched a campaign titled 'Check if You Can Afford It!' to alert consumers about the financial risks associated with buy now, pay later schemes, engaging over 250 partners.

The Polish competition authority, UOKiK, has initiated a campaign called 'Check if You Can Afford It!' aimed at raising awareness among consumers about the potential financial pitfalls of buy now, pay later (BNPL) options. This campaign comes in response to the ongoing sales frenzy, particularly during the New Year sales, which can tempt consumers into making impulsive purchases without considering the long-term consequences.

UOKiK President Tomasz Chróstny emphasized the importance of understanding that BNPL schemes essentially function as credit, which can lead to excessive debt and negatively impact consumers' creditworthiness. The campaign has garnered support from over 250 partners, including public and commercial media, institutions, organizations, companies, and influencers, who have contributed by broadcasting informational spots across various platforms.

Chróstny expressed gratitude to the partners for their efforts in promoting the campaign through free broadcasts on television, radio, and social media, as well as through programs and publications that highlight the risks associated with deferred payment options. He urged continued collaboration to ensure that consumers remain informed and cautious about their spending habits, especially during promotional periods that may encourage reckless financial decisions.

The campaign provides various formats of promotional materials for partners to use, including graphics and videos suitable for television, radio, online platforms, and social media. UOKiK aims to remind consumers that while BNPL options may seem convenient, they can lead to a loss of control over spending and increasing debt levels.
