Concerns over High Fuel Margins Impacting Pump Prices for Drivers

Fuel margins in the UK remain higher than historic levels, with both supermarket and non-supermarket fuel margins showing an increase from April to August 2024. This sustained high level of fuel margins indicates weakened competition in the road fuel retail market.
Despite a decrease in fuel prices for petrol and diesel from June to October 2024, drivers are still paying more due to stubbornly high fuel margins. The CMA is concerned about the impact on pump prices and the lack of competition in the sector.
The CMA recommended a new monitoring function and a 'Fuel Finder' scheme to empower drivers to find the cheapest fuel prices. The government has accepted these recommendations, aiming to launch the scheme by the end of next year to increase competition and support the economy.
