Norwegian Competition Authority Reports Market Share Changes in Grocery Sector

10.04.2025 | Norwegian competition authority

The Norwegian competition authority's latest report reveals significant shifts in market shares among grocery chains, with Rema experiencing growth while NorgesGruppen sees a decline.

The Norwegian competition authority has released its 2024 grocery report, highlighting the concentration of the grocery market in Norway. The report indicates that Rema has achieved the largest increase in market share over the past five years, while NorgesGruppen has faced the most significant decrease.

According to the findings, NorgesGruppen holds a market share of 43.5%, followed by Coop at 29.2%, Rema at 23.9%, and Bunnpris at 3.3%. The low-price segment is particularly dominant, with Kiwi emerging as the largest low-cost chain after surpassing Rema in 2023. Extra has also seen substantial growth among low-cost chains, partly due to the rebranding of Prix stores to Extra stores.

The report reveals considerable regional disparities in market shares. While NorgesGruppen is the largest national player, it has lower market shares in Central and Northern Norway, where Coop is stronger. In the 50 least populated municipalities in Norway, Coop accounts for nearly half of the revenue, whereas Rema has the least.

Despite the challenges faced by some chains, the low-price concepts of Coop, NorgesGruppen, and Rema have all shown positive development, with an overall increase in revenue share of 4.8 percentage points. This growth has come at the expense of both broad assortment and local stores.

The competition authority's analysis focuses on traditional grocery retail with physical sales, contrasting with NielsenIQ's inclusion of online sales this year. The report provides details on annual revenue, market shares, regional variations, and segment distribution for the period from 2020 to 2024.

Additionally, the grocery report summarizes the key issues the competition authority has been addressing within the grocery market throughout 2024.
