On November 28, 2025, the Hungarian competition authority (GVH) issued a warning to consumers regarding Black Friday sales, urging them to be careful and avoid impulse purchases. The authority has been providing informational videos and materials to help consumers navigate potentially misleading offers and make thoughtful purchasing decisions.

As Black Friday approaches, many retailers have been promoting significant discounts, especially online. However, the GVH emphasizes that consumers can only benefit from these deals if businesses operate within fair practices. The authority previously alerted consumers about various tricks retailers might use to exploit the shopping frenzy.

The GVH advises consumers to carefully consider their needs before making a purchase and to verify essential information about discounted products, including any additional costs like shipping fees. They recommend using price comparison websites and checking customer reviews to ensure the reliability of online stores.

Additionally, the GVH highlights the importance of understanding the terms and conditions of sales and reminds consumers of their right to withdraw from online purchases within 14 days without justification, barring a few exceptions.

To protect consumers, the GVH also supports businesses in avoiding legal violations by providing educational videos on compliance with promotional regulations. Following Black Friday, the authority will continue to monitor pricing practices in online shops and will take necessary actions if any violations are suspected.

Recently, the GVH announced that the operator of a popular online fashion portal, About You, misled consumers with deceptive promotions and exerted psychological pressure. As a result of the authority's actions, About You will compensate several hundred thousand Hungarian consumers with over 500 million HUF and pay a fine of 505 million HUF to the national budget.
