The Polish competition authority, along with the Trade Inspection and the National Revenue Administration, conducted a thorough inspection of imported artificial jewelry. They examined the labeling of 227 product batches that were detained by customs officials at the border, discovering irregularities in 67% of the cases.

Laboratory tests were performed on 33 jewelry samples to check for permissible levels of cadmium and lead, both of which are highly toxic and carcinogenic. The testing process involved cutting the jewelry, separating metal components, dissolving them in acids, and analyzing the solutions. The results were alarming, with one necklace containing 333 times the allowable lead content, and a brooch and bracelet each exceeding cadmium limits by 400 times.

According to Tomasz Chróstny, President of the Polish competition authority, the Trade Inspection continuously monitors non-food products throughout the year to swiftly remove non-compliant items from the market. The collaboration with the National Revenue Administration allows for product inspections before they reach consumers, which is crucial for items like jewelry where safety cannot be assessed visually.

As a result of these joint efforts, customs authorities prevented the circulation of 1,183,178 pieces and 467 kg of artificial jewelry, with nearly 4,500 items containing dangerous levels of heavy metals. This initiative aims to protect consumers, especially children and teenagers who often choose cheaper jewelry options.

Małgorzata Krok, Deputy Head of the National Revenue Administration, emphasized the importance of coordinated actions to ensure that only safe and compliant products are available in the Polish and EU markets. The collaboration between the Polish competition authority, Trade Inspection, and the National Revenue Administration will continue, with reports available for public access.
