The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced that households utilizing high-speed NBN plans with fibre to the premises (FTTP) or hybrid fibre coaxial (HFC) connections are now benefiting from faster internet speeds. This improvement follows NBN Co's recent upgrade program, as detailed in the latest Measuring Broadband Australia report.
In September 2025, NBN Co increased the wholesale plan speeds for specific NBN plans using FTTP or HFC connections without additional charges for retailers. However, this upgrade was not extended to other connection types. The speed enhancements apply to the NBN Home Fast, NBN Home Superfast, and NBN Home Ultrafast plans, which have seen their speeds rise significantly.
The NBN Home Fast plan, now offering 500/50 Mbps, has become the most popular among the monitored services. During peak hours, the average download speed for this plan reached 503.9 Mbps, with a notable 80.5% of services achieving speeds exceeding 500 Mbps.
Despite the overall improvements, a small percentage of services are underperforming, potentially due to outdated in-home equipment such as older routers. ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey emphasized the importance of consumers ensuring their equipment is capable of supporting the higher speeds available on their upgraded plans.
While the upgraded plans cater to larger households with high broadband usage, the ACCC suggests that some households may find better value in less expensive plans depending on their usage needs. Households with fibre to the node (FTTN) or fibre to the curb (FTTC) connections have not seen any changes in their broadband speeds, with the maximum available still capped at 100 Mbps.
The report also highlighted performance improvements on Starlink’s Satellite network, with average upload and download speeds increasing significantly compared to previous reports.
