The Estonian competition authority, known as Konkurentsiamet, has expressed its approval of the recent amendments to the competition law, which have come into effect. These changes provide greater legal clarity and empower the authority to conduct investigations more effectively.

Under the new framework, the authority can now carry out proceedings in both competition supervision and misdemeanor cases. This includes the ability to request information and conduct searches as part of its investigative measures. The authority can also mandate the cessation of prohibited actions and approve commitments from companies.

The primary goal of the competition supervision proceedings is to identify and terminate prohibited actions, while the misdemeanor proceedings focus on penalizing companies for their violations. Companies found guilty of anti-competitive agreements or abusing a dominant market position may face fines of up to 10% of their global turnover.

Konkurentsiamet will keep all parties involved informed about the continuation of proceedings in competition supervision and will regularly update its website with practices and guidelines related to procedural matters.
