The Hungarian competition authority, Gazdasági Versenyhivatal (GVH), has fined Euronet Banktechnikai Kft. over 63 million HUF for engaging in misleading commercial practices regarding the functionalities displayed on its ATMs.
The investigation, initiated in March 2025, revealed that Euronet only presented options for 'cash withdrawal and balance inquiry' and 'other' services on the ATM's main screen. This led consumers to believe they could only access cash withdrawal and balance inquiry services together, rather than separately, which was misleading.
The GVH found that between July 5, 2023, and March 26, 2025, Euronet failed to clearly indicate that cash withdrawal and balance inquiry services could be accessed independently. Following the initiation of the GVH's proceedings, Euronet acknowledged the violation and promptly updated the ATM screens not only in Hungary but also in several neighboring countries.
Additionally, Euronet has placed consumer information on its website to clarify the services offered. The GVH has mandated that the fine of 63,112,000 HUF be paid to the central budget within 30 days.
The national competition authority has urged consumers to exercise caution when using ATMs, particularly abroad, and to be aware of potential costs, especially when not using their card issuer's services.
