Beware of Deceptive Marketing Tactics Targeting Seniors

17.01.2025 | Polish competition authority

The Polish competition authority warns seniors about deceptive marketing practices that exploit their vulnerabilities, especially during promotional events.

The Polish competition authority has issued a warning to seniors about the risks associated with promotional events that offer free health screenings and prize draws. These events often serve as a front for aggressive sales tactics aimed at selling overpriced products.

Consultants, who appear friendly and understanding, invite seniors to these events under the guise of providing free spirometry or eye examinations. However, the true intention is to sell items such as wool mattresses, ozone generators, or multifunctional vacuum cleaners, which are often not worth their price. Attendees may feel pressured to make immediate purchases, with salespeople offering assistance in transporting heavy items, only to later push for signing credit agreements at home.

Consumers are reminded that they have specific rights in these situations. They can withdraw from contracts signed at promotional events or during uninvited home visits without providing a reason, with a 14-day period for show purchases and 30 days for home visit purchases. Additionally, any financial agreements made during these events are deemed invalid.

The authority emphasizes the importance of protecting oneself by not signing documents under pressure, discussing decisions with family or friends, and ensuring they have copies of any signed documents. It also encourages seniors to be cautious about the contact details of the businesses involved.

To further assist consumers, the Polish competition authority offers a free brochure titled “Beware of Promotional Events,” which can be ordered or downloaded online. They also provide access to a virtual guide on consumer rights, including templates, webinars, and podcasts to educate seniors on how to avoid scams.
