CMA Launches Investigations into Apple and Google's Mobile Ecosystems

23.01.2025 | UK competition authority

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has initiated investigations into Apple and Google, focusing on their dominance in mobile ecosystems, including operating systems and app stores.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has announced the launch of strategic market status (SMS) investigations into Apple and Google, examining their positions within mobile ecosystems. These investigations will assess the impact of these companies on consumers and businesses that rely on mobile devices for various services, including app development.

Mobile devices are integral to daily life in the UK, with 94% of individuals aged 16 and older owning smartphones. The average user spends approximately three hours daily on these devices, which are essential for browsing, shopping, and communication. The app development sector alone contributes around £28 billion to the UK economy, with nearly 15,000 businesses involved in creating mobile applications.

Apple and Google dominate the mobile device market, with their operating systems (iOS and Android) and app stores holding significant market power. This dominance allows them to influence the content and services available on mobile devices, raising concerns about fair competition and innovation opportunities for other businesses.

The CMA's investigations will explore the competitive dynamics within Apple’s and Google’s ecosystems, potential leveraging of their market power, and any exploitative practices that may disadvantage app developers. The authority aims to ensure that competition functions effectively, allowing for fair treatment of consumers and businesses.

Possible outcomes of the investigations could include imposing conduct requirements on Apple and Google to enhance competition, such as facilitating easier access for other apps and services. The CMA plans to engage with various stakeholders, including device manufacturers and software developers, to gather evidence before reaching a decision by October 2025.
