The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has reached a settlement with Publishing.com LLC and its principals, requiring them to pay $1.5 million for misleading consumers regarding income potential from their products. The company is also mandated to substantiate any future earnings claims.
Publishing.com marketed online self-publishing programs, including the AI Publishing Academy and Publishing Accelerator, claiming they could help consumers earn substantial income. However, the FTC found that most consumers did not achieve the promised earnings, and the company imposed difficult conditions on refund requests.
The complaint highlighted that the company often used biased testimonials and failed to disclose connections between reviewers and the company. The settlement prohibits Publishing.com from making misleading earnings claims and requires transparency regarding endorsements and refund policies.
This action is part of the FTC's broader initiative to protect American workers from deceptive practices, aligning with the agency's dual mandate of consumer protection and competition enforcement.
