The Spanish competition authority, CNMC, has released new statistics indicating a strengthened competitive landscape in the fixed broadband market for 2024. By the end of the year, the total number of active fixed broadband accesses reached 18.3 million, marking a 6.2% increase, with fiber optic to the home (FTTH) accounting for 90.3% of these accesses.

Competition has notably intensified in small and medium-sized municipalities, where alternative operators have significantly increased their presence. In rural areas, these operators achieved over 45% market share through their own networks, demonstrating a strategic focus on geographic niches where they compete directly with historical operators.

Major cities like Madrid and Barcelona continue to see high levels of competition due to overlapping networks, providing consumers with more choices. Movistar remains strong in smaller towns with over 50% market share, while MASORANGE has solidified its position as a national leader in medium-sized municipalities.

Access to next-generation networks (NGA), including FTTH and HFC, reached 96.9% of total active fixed broadband lines. FTTH continues to grow at double-digit rates, while HFC is on the decline. Fiber optic services are now available in 6,965 municipalities, covering 99.7% of the population, with penetration levels in smaller municipalities approaching those of larger cities.
