The Hungarian competition authority, Gazdasági Versenyhivatal (GVH), celebrated its 35th anniversary at an international conference in Budapest, highlighting the critical role it plays in ensuring fair competition in Hungary.
During the event, GVH President Csaba Balázs Rigó emphasized the need for predictability and security in a time filled with challenges. He noted that the GVH has been instrumental in uncovering and dismantling cartels, saving consumers billions of forints.
President Sulyok Tamás opened the conference, stating that fair competition is essential for economic stability and consumer trust. He acknowledged the GVH's vital role in the legal framework of Hungary.
Rigó pointed out that the GVH's establishment marked the beginning of a new economic era, where protecting competition became a fundamental condition for the functioning of a market economy. He stressed that the challenges faced by competition authorities are becoming increasingly complex due to digitalization and the rise of data-driven economic models.
The conference featured various speakers, including Andrew N. Ferguson, Chairman of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, who discussed international cooperation and current challenges in competition and consumer protection law.
