On March 13, 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) granted authorization to the Board of Airline Representatives of Australia Inc (BARA) to continue its collective bargaining efforts. This authorization allows BARA to negotiate and implement arrangements for acquiring essential aviation services from international airport operators and suppliers of government-mandated security services.
The ACCC recognized that these services exhibit characteristics of a natural monopoly, which justifies the need for collective bargaining among airlines. The authorization is set to last for a period of 10 years, expiring on April 4, 2035, as requested by BARA.
For more information regarding the application and the ACCC's determination, interested parties can refer to the ACCC’s public register, which provides detailed insights into the decision-making process.
