The Dutch competition authority, ACM, has mandated CVmaker to improve clarity regarding subscription costs after consumer complaints about misleading pricing.

The Netherlands Authority of Consumers and Markets (ACM) has intervened to ensure that CVmaker B.V. provides clearer information about subscription costs on its website, CVmaker.nl. This action follows numerous consumer reports indicating that users were unaware they had signed up for a paid subscription.

Consumers had mistakenly believed they were only paying a small one-time fee for creating CVs and cover letters. However, after downloading their documents, they discovered they had entered a trial subscription costing 1.99 euros, which automatically converted to a monthly subscription of 21.99 euros after fourteen days. ACM highlighted that businesses are legally required to transparently inform consumers about pricing and subscription duration before any contract is finalized.

In response to ACM's intervention, CVmaker has revised its website to enhance clarity regarding costs and subscription terms. The company has also committed to halting the collection of outstanding amounts from customers whose agreements were not compliant with legal standards. Furthermore, CVmaker will no longer impose statutory collection costs on customers.

Consumers who feel misled by incorrect or incomplete information about pricing can annul their contracts, rendering any payment obligations void. ACM provides sample letters on its website to assist consumers in this process. The authority emphasizes that businesses must provide honest and clear information to ensure consumers can make informed choices and avoid unexpected costs, thereby fostering fair competition in the market.
