The CNMC (National Commission on Markets and Competition) has launched a public consultation regarding the implementation of an alias registration system designed to combat fraud through messaging services, particularly focusing on smishing scams. This initiative is crucial for businesses in the telecommunications and digital messaging sectors, as it will necessitate changes in their operational practices to align with new regulatory requirements.

Starting June 2026, telecommunications operators will be mandated to block messages that utilize unregistered aliases or those not sent by authorized providers. This means that companies must ensure their aliases are properly registered to maintain effective communication with their customers and avoid potential disruptions.

The consultation process, which includes 24 questions about the registration procedure and the functioning of the registry, is open until September 30, 2025. It primarily targets mobile operators, messaging service providers, and businesses that use alphanumeric aliases. However, other organizations are also encouraged to participate and share their insights.

Competition law advisors should emphasize the importance of compliance with these new regulations to avoid penalties and encourage affected businesses to engage in the public consultation. This proactive approach will help companies navigate the upcoming changes and maintain the integrity of their communications while enhancing consumer protection against identity theft.
