The Competition Bureau of Canada has initiated an investigation into BWX Technologies' proposed acquisition of Kinectrics, following the issuance of court orders to gather necessary information. This investigation aims to assess whether the acquisition could substantially lessen or prevent competition within Canada’s nuclear medicine sector.
Both BWX Technologies and Kinectrics are key players in the nuclear medicine industry, providing products and services throughout the medical isotope value chain. The acquisition includes Kinectrics' stake in Isogen, a joint venture that produces medical isotopes in collaboration with Framatome Canada.
To facilitate the investigation, the Federal Court of Canada has mandated three market participants—Bruce Power, Ontario Power Generation (OPG), and Framatome Canada—to provide relevant information and documentation. This includes transaction agreements, capacity, sales data, and insights into competitive dynamics.
In addition to the court orders, the Bureau has issued supplementary information requests to both BWX Technologies and Kinectrics. BWX Technologies announced its intention to acquire Kinectrics on January 7, 2025, prompting the Bureau's scrutiny.
