The Polish competition authority, UOKiK, has issued a statement highlighting the risks consumers face during the Black Friday shopping frenzy. With enticing deals and aggressive marketing, shoppers may fall into traps of overspending and debt.
UOKiK President Tomasz Chróstny emphasized the importance of careful decision-making amidst the pressure of promotional campaigns. He reminded consumers that price reductions should be clearly marked, along with the terms of product availability, delivery, and payment.
Consumers are advised to check the lowest price from the past 30 days before making a purchase to ensure that discounts are genuine and not just marketing tricks. This information should be readily available wherever discounts are advertised.
Additionally, the authority cautioned against offers from non-EU sellers that may appear attractive but could lead to complications. Shoppers should be wary of 'Buy now, pay later' schemes, which can lead to unexpected financial burdens if payments are not made on time.
UOKiK also warned about deceptive online practices, known as dark patterns, that can manipulate consumer choices. Shoppers are encouraged to remain aware of marketing tactics that create urgency and emotional pressure.
