Jeanne Pratt, Interim Commissioner of Competition, addressed the Canadian Bar Association Competition Law Fall Conference, highlighting the critical role of competition in building a resilient Canadian economy.

She noted that Canada faces significant economic and geopolitical challenges, prompting discussions about the need for investment and strong companies. However, Pratt argued that competition is essential not only during growth periods but also in times of crisis.

Pratt introduced the concept of 'adaptive resilience,' which goes beyond merely bouncing back from economic shocks. She emphasized the need for an economy that learns from disruptions and emerges stronger, advocating for competitive markets that foster innovation and provide alternatives.

She discussed the Bureau's efforts to enforce competition laws, including recent actions to block mergers that would harm competition, such as the proposed acquisition of B&G Foods' Canadian Green Giant business. Pratt also highlighted the importance of clear guidance and predictable enforcement to encourage investment.

Looking ahead, she acknowledged the challenges posed by technological advancements, particularly artificial intelligence, and stressed that competition must remain a priority even as new regulations are considered.
