The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has authorized AusPayNet and other stakeholders to collaborate on the future of account-to-account payment systems in Australia for 18 months.

On August 1, 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a determination granting authorisation AA1000690 to Australian Payments Network Limited (AusPayNet) and several other industry stakeholders. This authorisation allows them to engage in discussions and share information aimed at developing a unified vision for the future of account-to-account payment infrastructure in Australia.

The collaboration includes members of the Bulk Electronic Clearing System (BECS) Framework, members of the New Payments Platform Scheme, and other relevant industry participants. The Reserve Bank of Australia and the Commonwealth Treasury will also participate in these discussions, ensuring that key financial authorities are involved in shaping the future payment landscape.

It is important to note that the authorisation does not permit the industry to implement any agreed-upon positions at this stage. Should the stakeholders wish to proceed with implementing any agreements reached, a separate application for authorisation will be required. The ACCC's authorisation is valid for 18 months, expiring on January 31, 2027.

For further details regarding the ACCC's decision, interested parties can refer to the ACCC’s public register, which includes information on Australian Payments Network Limited and other involved entities.
