Infineon Secures Approval for Marvell's Automotive Ethernet Acquisition

12.06.2025 | German competition authority

The German competition authority has approved Infineon Technologies' acquisition of Marvell's automotive Ethernet business, enhancing Infineon's offerings in the software-defined vehicle market.

The Bundeskartellamt, Germany's competition authority, has officially cleared Infineon Technologies AG's plans to acquire the automotive Ethernet business from US-based Marvell Technology, Inc. This acquisition is significant as Marvell's Ethernet components are essential for data transmission in software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

Andreas Mundt, President of the Bundeskartellamt, stated that the acquisition will allow Infineon to enhance its product portfolio in a rapidly growing market. The authority conducted a survey involving various customers and competitors, which revealed a competitive landscape characterized by numerous players, product interchangeability due to standardization, and substantial buyer power from original equipment manufacturers and car manufacturers.

Infineon, known for its semiconductor solutions across various applications, already produces microcontroller units for SDVs. The acquisition will enable the company to broaden its product range and develop systems specifically for SDVs, particularly targeting original equipment manufacturers. Despite the potential strengthening of Infineon's competitive position, the Bundeskartellamt concluded that the merger would not negatively impact the competitive dynamics in the affected product markets, given the presence of sufficient competitors.
